Lesson 1
Subject: Let’s talk about food.
Objectives:
Practical: to present and practice new vocabulary on the topic ‘Food’;
to master pupils’ listening, speaking and reading skills;
Educational: to increase pupils’ active involvement in all areas of language practice;
Developing: to enrich pupils’ knowledge and encourage them to learn English.
Equipment: basket with food, pictures of food, computer, DVD, CD, cards with task, posters of food.

Procedure

  1. Organizing a lesson. Greetings.

The teacher greets the pupils and organizes the class for the work. She announces the topic of the lesson.
Teacher: Good morning, pupils. How are you?
Pupils: We’re fine, thank you.
Teacher(shows basket): Look what I have found today on the window. How do you think what it is?
The pupils try to guess saying the words. For example, a doll, a pen, a book, a cat and so on.
Teacher: Now let’s see. Wow, it’s food. Let’s learn it.

  1. Phonetic warm-up

For the phonetic warm-up the teacher presents the poem about vegetables. The poster with them is pinned up on the board.
Teacher: Listen what they say about themselves.
The pupils listen to the teacher’s speech. Then they follow to her paying attention to pronunciation of the sound [?].

I’m a carrot – red and big
I’m a cabbage – round, green.
I’m a beet – red and sweet
Hey, and what about us?

  1. Presenting vocabulary

Teacher: As you see today we are going to speak about different food. I’m going to present you some food.
The teacher presents the words on topic ‘Food’ using Power point presentation.
Teacher: Do you like food? Let’s learn it. Look at these pictures of food. Now listen to these words and repeat them.
The teacher runs the DVD (DVD “Welcome Starter B”), the pupils look at the pictures and repeat the words.
Teacher: And now, look, some more food. Name it after me.
The teacher shows flashcards (sandwich, drinks, apple, banana, biscuit, tomato, pear, grapes) and say the words. The pupils repeat after her. Later on the teacher shows flashcards in different order to check how the pupils remember them.
Teacher: Please, open your books on p. 60 (Family and Friends – 1). Look at the pictures and chant.
The pupils listen and chant (track 88, Family and Friends – 1)

  1. Physical warm up

Teacher: We are tired and now let’s do some exercises. Do you remember our poem ‘Hands up, hands down’?
Pupils: Hands up, hansd down
Hands on the sides
Sit down, stand up
Clap your hands, tap your feet.

  1. Listening

Teacher: Tim and his friends are having lunch at school. Look at the pictures in your book and listen. Then you’ll say what food they had.
The pupils listen to track 89 (Family and Friends – 1) and then say: sandwich, banana, apple.
Teacher: Look at Tim’s lunch box. What has he got? Has he got any food? We must help him. Listen and draw some food in his lunch box. (Addition 1)
The pupils listen, draw and colour. Tapescript: I’ve got a green apple. This is my orange and sandwich.

  1. Speaking

Teacher: And who can tell me what you’ve got in your box?
The pupils chorally and in turn say their sentences. For example, I’ve got a biscuit. I’ve got a fish.

  1. Reading

Teacher: Now, let’s check how well you know our food. Now your task is to find the names of food and circle them with the help of the box.
The pupils work on cards (Addition 2)
